"Twilight" movie/book review
I'm just back from watching Twilight and let me start by saying that Robert Pattinson (Edward Cullen) can't play ...not too well anyway :D. I say that with every sympathy though, because in the end I did enjoy the movie. In view of how the character is portrayed in the novel, my statement could also be seen as unfair Stephenie Meyer uses alot of inner dialogue and description to relate the character's feelings to the reader and when you have to enact anger, lust, restrainet, hunger and fear at the same, simultaneously being a supposedly sexy as hell vampire, no wonder, you might end up starring slightly constipated into the camera...if you are not Al Pacino.
But all in all Edward Cullen and his colleagues did a pretty good job. The movie follows the novel more or less closely, at points even adopting key strings of dialogue directly from the novel.
I have only read the first novel and I'd have to say that I enjoyed it. It's a nice non-brainy fluffy romance/vampire novel, ideal for a lazy sunday. It has that little twist of romantic tension which I thoroughly enjoyed, but on the other hand, the author has an irritating hang towards repetition. At some point, I thought I'd throw the book into the stove, if Meyer mentioned Erdward's cold but oh so beautiful skin again. But as I already said, it's all in all an enjoyable read. Get a used copy or borrow it. No need to spend the full price a new copy would cost.
I believe that watching the movie after you have read the book makes it more enjoyable, just because you have the joy of comparing the scenes in the book to the scenes in the movie or comparing your own imagination with the adaptation to the silver screen. I personally was disappointed by Erdward's angry hiss at James on the baseball field. I was expecting the angry feral growl as described in the book.
The teenage girls next to me enjoyed it thoroughly, especially when Edward opened his shirt (did they have to add that tinkling sound effect???) and the guy behind me got hissed at repeatedly by his girlfriend "not to spoil the mood" for her with his snide comments.
My conclusion: both book and movie are nice for a lazy day/evening, if you don't expect intellectual masterpieces and just go with the flow.
I for my part really like vampire stories :).
